Addictions, whether to drugs or alcohol, are best treated in a rehabilitation treatment center that can provide an individualized continuum of care. Recovery from addiction is a very personal journey. Treatment programs should be tailored to the unique needs of each individual. Recovery progresses through a series of stages, and each individual travels the road to recovery at his own pace. A drug and alcohol rehabilitation treatment center must be able to assist the patient through each stage of recovery and prepare him to meet the challenges that lie ahead. This is what is meant by a continuum of care. It is the continuous support and care of the patient through each stage of recovery.

Why do some people become addicted to drugs or alcohol and others do not? It’s a perplexing question. People used to think that addiction showed a lack of personal discipline or lack of character. They believed that addicts could stop taking drugs or overindulging in alcohol if they really wanted to. Scientific research has proved this to be untrue. When taken repeatedly, drugs and alcohol effect changes in the chemistry of the brain (see our July 24 post) that make it impossible for an individual to stop using the drug without professional help. Drug addiction and alcohol addiction (called alcoholism) are diseases. Like diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic medical conditions, drug addiction and alcoholism cannot be “cured”; but they can be treated and successfully controlled with help from a professional alcohol and drug rehabilitation treatment center. With treatment, addicts and alcoholics can learn to live without drugs and alcohol and can live productive, satisfying lives.

Drug addiction and alcoholism are treatable diseases. In recent years, scientists studying the complex interactions between drugs and the brain and body have vastly improved our understanding of addiction and how to treat it. We now know that addiction is a brain disease with serious physical repercussions. Repeated use of drugs causes changes in the structure and function of the brain that can profoundly affect behavior, emotions and the physical body. Drug or alcohol rehabilitation treatment at a respected drug treatment center can counteract the powerfully disruptive effects of addiction and help addicts recover and regain control of their lives.

Drug and alcohol addiction cause changes in the structure and function of the brain. While drug or alcohol use begins as a conscious choice, excessive use over time triggers changes in the brain. These changes affect the areas of the brain that govern decision making, self control, self preservation and pleasure. As drug abuse continues, the brain sends out increasingly intense impulses to take the drug. What began as a choice becomes a compulsion that is impossible to deny. Without the drug, the body goes into withdrawal which can be both physically and mentally painful, encouraging continued drug use.

Substance abuse is the chronic overindulgence in a chemical — alcohol or a drug — that is harmful to a person’s health and welfare. Substance abusers can become dependent upon the use of a drug, developing an undeniable, compulsive need for the drug. They lose any vestige of control over their use of the drug, despite the consequences of that use. Family, job, school, personal health, morals and ethics — all become less important that using the drug. The drug becomes the only important thing in the person’s life. It fills his every thought and drives every action. When excessive use becomes physically and mentally compulsive, the abuser has moved from drug use to drug dependence. He has become addicted to the drug. He is a drug addict.

Methadone addiction can be treated in a drug rehabilitation treatment center. Because withdrawal can be lengthy and extremely difficult, constant medical care and supervision in a residential treatment facility that specializes in the treatment of methadone addiction is necessary. It is essential that treatment center staff be trained and experienced in helping individuals recover from methadone abuse.

For more than 30 years methadone has been used to treat addiction to heroin and other opioid drugs, including morphine. Like other narcotics, heroin releases dopamine into the bloodstream which activates the brain’s pleasure receptors producing a state of high euphoria. To maintain the same level of pleasure, heroin addicts must take increasing amounts of the drug to maintain a continuous supply of opioid to brain receptors. This produces extreme swings in mood and behavior as the drug peaks and ebbs in the bloodstream.

A synthetic opiate, methadone is primarily used to treat narcotic addiction from drugs such as heroin and morphine. Because it is longer-lasting than natural opiates — a single dose lasts up to 36 hours — it can be administered once a day. This and the fact that it is usually taken orally rather than injected like heroin made it the cornerstone of heroin detoxification and maintenance programs popular in U.S. cities in the 1960s and 1970s.
